Producing appropriate sound bears good pronunciation. Good pronunciation affected to the good communication. The good communication determines one’s integrity among others. For academic students, especially English department students, it is necessary to have good pronunciation by mastering speech production since they learn in English area with recommended literature only in English. But learning how to produce appropriate English sound as foreign language is not easy for several 8th semester of TBI students at STAIN Pamekasan. There are so much thing to determine in associating with others using ‘unfamiliar’ language. This problem occurred when they use English as tool to share ideas in academic field, as in a material presentation, formal English discussion, etc., because they learn English not as the second language, but as foreign language.
This research is questioning two problems. First, how do the students make errors in pronouncing the sound /f/, /v/, and /p/, and the second, in what aspect do the students make errors in pronouncing the sound /f/, /v/, and /p/.
So, this research conducted to identify the errors made by the students in pronouncing the sound /f/, /v/, and /p/, also to analyze in what aspect the students make errors in pronouncing the mentioned sound.
The researcher chooses to use qualitative descriptive as the method of research. She collects the data by using observation, interview, documentation, and field note. The researcher gathered more than fifty errors but only 36 errors displayed and analyzed since the error of speech sound cannot be physically captured.
The result then shows that the students mostly changed the sound /f/ to /v/ or /p/ in certain situation. Also they changed the sound /v/ to /f/ and /p/. But the sound /p/ changed only to /f/ since the voiced sound seems too heavy to produce in normal speech production. The all changes, even they do not change the meaning of words, it still affected effectiveness of communication, so it is suggested to the students to have more practice in pronouncing the error sound. Also this thesis report hopefully become the reminder to English lecturer, especially who taught pronunciation subject, to have wider attention related to the pronunciation progress of the students.
