Cora Lindsay argued that speaking involves putting message together, communicating the message, and interaction with other people. It is clear that students need to speak to communicate each other. However, the problems right now are the students are hard to speak to express their minds. So that teachers are suggested to create and use interesting method. One of the methods is story retelling. In order to make story retelling more interesting, good media are needed. English Picture Story Books is one of many media to teach story retelling. Mitchell defines that picture story book are books in which the picture and text are tightly intertwined. Neither the pictures nor the words are self sufficient, they need each other to tell the story.
There are two problem statements in this research. The first, do the students taught by using English picture story books have better speaking ability in story retelling than those taught by using non-English picture story books at the eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Muchlishin Pakondang Rubaru academic year 2013-2014? The second, how is statistically significant difference between students taught by using English picture story books than those taught by using non-English picture story books on their speaking ability in story retelling at the eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Muchlishin Pakondang Rubaru academic year 2013-2014?
In this research, the objectives of the study was to measure the effectiveness of speaking ability in story retelling using English picture story books at the eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Muchlishin Pakondang Rubaru academic year 2013-2014. And to analyze statistically significant difference between students taught using English picture story books and without using English picture story books on students’ speaking ability in story retelling at the Eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Muchlishin Pakondang Rubaru academic year 2013-2014. The researcher conducted an Experimental quantitative research. The experimental was held trough pretest posttest equivalent group design. The population of the research was the eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Muchlishin Pakondang Rubaru. The total number of this research became the sample. The data were collected through speaking test.
In solving the problems, the researcher carried out a Quasi-experimental research using statistical method called t-test. The researcher used two groups: experimental group and control group. In the control group the researcher used written of Narrative text, while in the experimental group, the researcher used English picture story books. The computation result of t-test was 6, 099. The critical value of t was 2, 03 for α = 5% and df 35, because of T value was higher than the critical value of t (6, 099>2, 03), it could be concluded that there was significant difference on the students’ speaking ability in story retelling between the students taught using English picture story book and students taught without English picture story book.
In referring to the experience in conducting this research, the researcher offer suggestion to the teacher to improve the students’ speaking ability in story retelling in order to get better result. The use of English picture story books should be maintained frequently and recommended to English teachers, especially to teach Junior High School in order to attract their motivation in learning English to be more fun.
