Learning vocabulary is very important because vocabulary is one of aspects in learning a foreign language. Teaching vocabulary to the students are not easy. To solve this problem, the teacher has to create appropriate strategy to teach vocabulary easily. That is puzzle piece. Puzzle piece is a kind of games which students must discuss with their group and they must design a puzzle piece to represent their topic. From the result in preliminary study, the researcher found many problems faced by the teacher in learning vocabulary. (1) The teacher had taught vocabulary to the students by using traditional strategy. (2) The students were not interested in studying vocabulary. (3) The teacher never gave a game which was related by vocabulary subject. (4) The students had no motivation to study English especially vocabulary.
This study is purposed at improving the vocabulary mastery ability of the students by using “Puzzle Piece Strategy”. It is selected because it can provide the reserach problem is “How can puzzle piece strategy improve vocabulary mastery ability of the ninth grade students in SMPN 5 Pamekasan?”
This study employs collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher acts as the teacher who conducts the teaching activity while her collaborator is positioned as the observer who observes the teacher performance and students’ activities during the teaching and learning process. The subject of this study are 36 students of the ninth grade in SMPN 5 Pamekasan in the academic year 2013/2014. The cycle of this research consists of four steps: Planning, Implementation, Observation, and Reflection.
The data is obtained from two major sources: the qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument used to collect data are test, and observation checklist. The research is completed in three cycles by three meetings.
The criteria of succes this research are (1) The average of students’ score in vocabulary tests were greater than or equal to 75 (the minimum learning mastery ability standard of vocabulary), (2) The students are involved actively in teaching and learning process of vocabulary is greater than or equal to 85% , (3) Puzzle piece strategy was as one strategy in teaching and learning vocabulary can be used by the English teacher of SMPN 5 Pamekasan to solve her problem in improving vocabulary mastery ability of students.
The research finding shows puzzle piece strategy in teaching and learning vocabulary can improve the students vocabulary mastery ability by reaching the criteria of success: (1) The students’ vocabulary achievement shows the satisfactory score. Out of 36 students, 35 students (97,2%) got score ≥ 75 (achieved) and 1 student (2,7%) got score less than 75 (not achieved), (2) The students’ participation shows enjoying, having high motivation, geeting interested to study vocabulary, and involving actively. Out of 36 students, 34 students (94,4%) were active and 2 students (2,5%) were passive. 94,4% is greater than 85%. It means that the criteria of success was achieved.
Based on the finding, it can be concluded that teaching and learning vocabulary by using puzzle piece strategy can improve not only vocabulary mastery ability but also students’ participation.
