The students of STAIN Pamekasan, especially the 7th semester students at TBI in 2011 in take have the final requirement before graduation to make research as the last course of under graduate, called thesis project. STAIN Pamekasan introduced the students to research methodology in the 6th semester. It was given in order to give the students knowledge about research before conducting a research. Before making thesis proposal or thesis report, TBI students find some difficulties to find research topic. Different subjects mark topics in different ways. Since the policy of research in STAIN Pamekasan made that the students can take one of the three subjects (education, linguistics, and literature) they have more opportunity to research many cases and they can choose one of many topics using qualitative or quantitative approach. The focuses of this study are the difficulties in finding research topics faced by 7th semester students at TBI STAIN Pamekasan in 2011 in take and the factors influencing them. The objectives are to know the difficulties in finding research topics faced by 7th semester students at TBI STAIN Pamekasan in 2011 in take and the factors influencing them.
This study is a descriptive research using a qualitative approach where STAIN Pamekasan is as the research setting whose the 7th semester students at TBI in 2011 in take who are doing research project as the data sources. The researcher used unstructured and open interview because the respondents are free to answer the researcher’s questions written in the interview guideline. Then she analyzed the data by using Miles and Huberman’s model of data analysis steps (Data Reduction, Data Display, and Conclusion Drawing or Verification).
The result of the analysis are the findings of difficulties in finding research topics faced by 7th semester students at TBI STAIN Pamekasan in 2011 in take as follow:
1. Based on Students’ Knowledge (understanding by experience or study, and which is either in a person’s mind or known by people generally):
a. The influence of previous thesis
b. Persuaded by recent/ actual issues
2. Based on Students’ Competence (the ability to find a topic):
a. Cannot measure self competence
b. Cannot formulate the right composition
c. Lack of experience
d. Difficulty in choosing the topic which one is regarded easier for students

3. Based on Technical (relating to the method):
a. Do not know how to start deciding a topic
b. Difficulty in determining approach and subject of the research
c. The students must choose the different topics from others because their topics were rejected by the institution
The factors influencing the difficulties of finding research topics faced by the students are:
1. Research theory and research method mastery
2. Motivation from people around students
3. The students do not have interest to do a research
4. Requirement of institution
