AN ANALYSIS OF POLITENESS THEORY USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE MOVIE ENTITLED “ZOOTOPIA” BASED ON BROWN & LEVINSON’S PERSPECTIVE

Keywords: Politeness, Movie, Brown & Levinson’s Perpective.
People assume that movie as entertainment vehicle only. Besides, we can
make movie as learning vehicle. In sociolinguistic for example, especially
politeness as one of elements in sociolinguistic. We can see it based on the
utterances which used by the characters, especially the main characters. In
Zootopia movie for example, we can correlate between the utterances and
politeness aspect which appear in movie itself.
Based on the statement above, there are two research focuses in this study.
The first is what type of politeness which used by Judy Hopps & Nick Wide as
main characters to other characters and otherwise in a movie entitled “Zootopia”.
The second is what factors which influence the choice of type of politeness by
Judy Hopps & Nick Wide as main characters to other characters and otherwise in
a movie entitled “Zootopia”.
In this study, the researcher uses qualitative approach because the kind of
data that will be produced is texts. While, the kind of this study is content
analysis. Content analysis emphasize an integrated view of texts and their specific
context. The procedure which is used by the researcher to collect the data are
observation and documentation. In observing the data, the researcher watches
Zootopia movie as the data repeatedly to understand what the movie is about and
to analyze the utterance which used by the main characters to other characters and
otherwise. Then, in doing documentation the researcher copies the movie’s
English subtitles as data which will make the observation easier. Then, the data
analysis which used in this study is content analysis based on Milles and
Huberman theories; reduce the data, display the data and conclude the data.
The result of this study found that the main characters uses the both of that
politeness type; positive politeness and negative politeness. Then, negative
politeness strategy is most used by the main characters to other characters and
otherwise in addressing, commanding and requesting than the positive one. Then,
there are two factors which influence the choice of type of politeness, they are:
payoff and the circumstances (social distance, relative power and size of
imposition). While, the dominant factor which influence the choice of type of
politeness strategy is payoff factor.
Based on the result of study above, the researcher expects can change the
viewers assumption that movie just as an entertainment. But, the viewers can get
the value in order to reflects it in the real life. Also, the researcher suggests to
reader to have a polite behaviour; the thing which can be gotten from reading
activity. It is also expected that the further researcher to continue this study on
other field; there are many types of politeness and politeness experts that the
further researcher can be as his/her topic & sources.
