Language is an integral part of human behaviour. Language is a device for
communicating ideas. Through communicating, people can express their idea or
opinion toward someone. The same message may be expressed very differently to
different people. People use language variation in different situations and different
purpose too, the variation of a language can be seen from the form of the
language, vocabulary, grammar and style etc. Style talks about a very distinctive
way how a person uses his or her own language consistently to express his or her
ideas, in order to be different from others. The researcher is interested in
investigating of Oprah Winfrey’s sentence types in delivering information to the
audience .
The research focuses of this research are; 1) What sentence types used in
Oprah Winfrey’s language?. 2) What communicative functions used in Oprah
Winfrey’s language ? While the research objective are : 1) to describe sentence
types used in Oprah Winfrey’s language, 2) to describe which communicative
functions used in Oprah Winfrey’s language.
The researcher used qualitative approach while the research method
applied it is to find out the best answer in the study of sentence types and
communicative function, and used descriptive research to obtain information
concerning the current status of phenomenan of Oprah Winfrey in Oprah Winfrey
show.
The result of this study showed, Oprah Winfrey’s language used sentence
types such as; declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, imperative sentence
and exclamative sentence. While the Communicative Function are: information,
motivation, asking question, greeting people,persuasion.
The researcher gives and some suggestion to the institutions, the readers,
further researchers and students to make giving information be clearly when this
information should be understand by audience.
