One of four skills should be mastered by the students is writing skill.
Writing is a process to put an idea in a piece of paper. By writing the students can
focus on their creativity. Therefore, the students have to practice more to do
writing task that can develope their writing skill. This research focuses on the
student’s ability in using cohesion in writing descriptive text. In this part,
cohesion is the object analysis of this research, because it is the basic component
to determine wheather the text is coherent or not.
There are three problem statements in this study: 1). How is the students’
ability in using cohesion in writing descriptive text? 2). What are the types of
cohesion used by the students in writing descriptie text? 3). What are the
dominant type of cohesion in writing descriptie text.
This research uses qulaitative descriptive in which the data taken from
observation, interview and docmentation. These data were analyzed using Haliday
and Hasan theory and also compare with other theory.
The result showed that the students’ ability in using cohesion in writing
descriptive is good. The type of cohesion used by the students is grammatical and
lexical cohesion, and the dominant type of cohesion used by the students is
grammatical cohesion.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for English teachers to make
their students understand more the material given by the teacher, for the students
is expected to be more aware the important of using cohesive device in writing,
and for the next researcher, the result of this research can be a reference of
comparison that might be relevant for their research
