AN ANALYSIS OF MAIN CHARACTER' S SOCIAL CONFLICTS IN ELIZABETH GILBERT'S NOVEL EAT PRAY LOVE

Literature is the result of a creative activity that is presented in the form of work. It is a literary work which is used by an author to convey a message about story of daily human life. A literary work, for instance, novel can give knowledge, experience and deep understanding about ourselves, world and our life. Novel is one of literary writing. It is a fictional prose narrative of considerable length, typically having a plot that is unfolded by the actions, speech and thoughts of the characters.
This research focuses to discuss the main character's social conflictsin Eat Pray Love novel. Then, the researcher adds the causes of the main character's social conflicts. Every social conflict should be solved, so the researcher adds the resolution of the main character to overcome the main character's social conflicts.

The researcher applies library research by using descriptive qualitative approach, because descriptive method is used to describe the main character's social conflicts in Elizabeth Gilbert's novel Eat Pray Love. The result of this re.search is written words not numerical data. The data are words, sentences;and .qi$c0t1rse of lhe nQyel 'Yhich are related to the main character's social conflicts. So; the report of this research will be written or describing on words to give the drawing and explanation about the data.
The researcher found that the main character's social problem is family disorganization. It is divided into three problems namely being failed marriage, interminable divorce and passionate love affair that ended in sickening heartbreak. This social conflict belongs to individual conflict. All of them are caused by the existence of differences between one character and the other character. The researcher also gives the resolution of the main character's social conflicts. The main character took some ways or resolution and a radical way to overcome her social conflicts by taking a Jong journey during one year. The main character visited three countries namely Italy, India, and Indonesia. These countries are believed by the main character can overcome her social conflicts. Finally, the main character took her journey and gained her happiness, health and balance.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for the reader to help them in getting a view for the reader how to analyze novel. It can help to give understanding for the reader to get a l ife description from this topic. It is suggested for the further researcher to help them by becoming a reference for the future researcher to continue this research.
