THE STUDY OF SPEECH ACT IN MARK TWAIN "THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN" BASED ON SEARCH THEORY

Keywords: Speech Act, Searle Theory.

In this research, researcher discusses the speech act in Mark Twain “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” based on Searle Theory. It takes based on phenomena in human communication which misunderstanding and misinterpretation always happent between speaker and hearer.
The problems are limited to analyze what types of speech act employed by the main character in Mark Twain the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn based on Searle theory and what the meanings of speech act are employed by the main character in Mark Twain the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn based on Searle theory. The objectives are limited to identify types of speech act employed by main character and to analyze the meanings of speech act employed by main character in Mark Twain The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
The approach and kind of research is qualitative content analysis. This study is conducted to anlyze the dialogs employed by main character in Mark Twain the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn based on speech act Searle theory. The researcher uses familiarizing and organizing because here researcher read and reread the text and viewing and reviewing the dialogs to identify the types of speech act and its meaning employed by the main character in Mark Twain the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn based on Searle theory and shows the finding by table to be interesting.
The result of this study, there are five types and its meaning of speech act based on Searle theory employed by main character in Mark Twain The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. They are 209 representatives (Assertation, statement of fact, claim, reporting, description, conclusion, and hypotheses), 159 directives (Asking, request, commands, suggestion, and dare), 7 commissives (Refuse, threats, oaths, pledging, and promise), 54 expressives (pleasure, likes, dislike, apology, joy, and greeting), 2 declarations (declaring of condition).
Based on the result, there are suggestion like English teacher must be expected to be able not only to deliver the material to the students but also able to inspire the students and make them motivated.
