THE STRATEGIES USED BY MEMBERS OF ASRAMA PUTERI KHADIJAH (APK) PAMEKASAN IN SPEAKING ENGLISH

Speaking is a productive language skill. Speaking is a tool how speaker expresses ideas to another one. It is one of skills that are importance and it is not easy to be mastered. Speaking English fluently in term of learning needs good model, method, technique and strategy. So that, students enjoy and feel comfort in learning as they are brought to an easy understanding toward what they have learnt. Strategies are important for language learning because they are tools of active, self-directed involvement, which is essential for developing communicative competence.The researcher is interested to investigate the strategies used by the members of AsramaPuteriKhadijah (APK)Pamekasanin speaking English.
There are three focuses in this research, namely:what the strategies used by members of AsramaPuteriKhadijah (APK) Pamekasan in speaking English, how the strategies used by members of AsramaPuteriKhadijah (APK) Pamekasan in speaking Englishand the impacts of strategies used by Members of AsramaPuteriKhadijah (APK) Pamekasan in speaking English.
In this research, the researcher uses qualitative as an approach of this research and descriptive as kind of the research. The researcher uses three instruments in collecting the data; observation, interview and documentation. For analyzing the data, the researcher uses data reduction, data display, and verification. Then the researcher uses triangulation of data source in checking the validity of data.
The result of this research found by the researcher is that the members at AsramaPuteriKhadijah (APK) Pamekasan use some strategies in speaking English such as repeating which is the members expressed the utterances more than once, recognizing and using formulas and patterns which is the members correct the expression that is uttered grammatically, translating of the expressions into another language, using mime and gesture to indicate the meaning of the expression and switching with mother tongue. They speak by English and when the speaking partner does not understand, the member is going to apply the strategy directly.The strategies used by the members of AsramaPuteriKhadijah (APK) Pamekasan give the impact for them. They are: improve speaking ability, add vocabularies and to be accustomed to speak English.
Based on the result, implementing strategies in speaking English is very useful to help the members of AsramaPuteriKhadijah (APK) Pamekasan and their speaking partners in interacting each other well. It is very goodin improving the members’ ability in English so they can use English as an interaction tool for their daily communication in AsramaPuteriKhadijah (APK) Pamekasan.
