People assume that movie as entertainment vehicle only. Beside, we can make movie as learning vehicle. In sociolinguistic for example, especially politeness as one of elements in sociolinguistic. We can see it based on the utterances which used by the character especially the main character. In Mona Lisa Smile movie for example, we can correlate between the utterances and politeness aspect which appear in movie itself.
Based on the statement above, there are two research focuses in this study. The first is what type of politeness which used by Katherine Watson as main character to other characters and otherwise in a movie entitled “Mona Lisa Smile”. The second is what factors which influence the choice of type of politeness by Katherine Watson as main character to other characters and otherwise in a movie entitled “Mona Lisa Smile”.
In this study, the researcher uses qualitative approach because the kind of data that will be produced is text. While, the kind of this study is content analysis. Content analysis emphasize an integrated view of text and their specific context. The procedure which is used by the researcher to collect the data are observation and documentation. In observing the data, the researcher watches Mona Lisa Smile movie as the data repeatedly to understand what movie is about and to analyze the utterance which used by the main character to other character and otherwise.
The result of this study found that the main character uses both of that politeness type; positive politeness and negative politeness. Then, positive politeness strategy is most used by the main character to other characters and otherwise in addressing, commanding, and requesting than negative one. Then, there are two factors which influence the choice of type of politeness they are: payoff, and the circumstances (social distance, relative power, and size of imposition). While, the dominant factor which influence the choice of type of politeness strategy is a payoff factor
