THE STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN SELECTING TEACHING METHODS FOR DESIGNING READING SYLLABUS DUMMY AT FIFTH SEMESTER OF TBI B CLASS IN IAIN MADURA

Syllabus is a document that consists of planning for classroom activities. It
has teaching method as one of the components to make the material easy delivered
to the students. Students who are in the fifth semester in B class found difficulties
to select the method suitable with reading skill. When they do the assignment
actually the students of the class are still confused and difficult in selecting the
teaching method of the materials. So, in the end of the assignment, they are almost
wrong in selecting the teaching methods. For that reason, the researcher
formulates two research questions: 1. What are the students’ difficulties in
selecting teaching methods for designing reading syllabus dummy at the fifth
semester of TBI B class in IAIN Madura? 2. What are the factors of students’
difficulties in selecting teaching methods for designing reading dummy syllabus at
the fifth semester of TBI B class in IAIN Madura?
This research used descriptive qualitative research. The researcher is as a key
instrument as observer in collecting the data. The data are taken from students of
TBI B class at the fifth semester in IAIN Madura by documentation, nonparticipant observation and unstructured interview. The data analysis is analysis
by using six interrelated steps (in Creswell book) in qualitative data analysis and
interpretation.
The research found that the students’ difficulties in selecting teaching method
for designing reading syllabus is showed the the syllabus only state learning
activities which it describes the activity of teaching learning general not in reading
specially, afraid of the method of reading is not match with the students and the
situation in the classroom, worried of students’ vocabulary, worried of determine
the main idea, don’t know about the skill in language teaching. The difficulties are
from internal and external factors. The internal factor of students related to
cognitive and affective factors those are caused by not all of teaching method they
mastered, laziness, less of vocabulary memorizing, lack of reading and
experience, and the last lack of enough references. Meanwhile the external factors
related to society those are friends and environment.
Based on the result of the research, the researcher suggests for the teacher or
lecturer need to be very careful in teaching the syllabus and try to close with
students to detect the students' difficulties and solve their problems in selecting
method for reading syllabus. The students must improve their language mastery to
be easy comprehend on how to select the method for reading syllabus and avoid
laziness in learning syllabus design to be able to selecting method of reading
syllabus they will make. Finally, the future researcher can use this research to do a
further research on the use of reading syllabus in classroom practice.
