THE STUDENTS' DIFFICULTIES IN WRITING AN ESSAY AT THE SEMESTER OF TBI AT IAIN MADURA ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/2020

Writing is one of the four basic skills in teaching and learning which must be mastered by the students and taught well by the teachers. Writing is a language in the form, it is used to convey information about something and to to express the idea. Writing essay is language skill that difficult for the students because essay is a short piece of writing that tells a person’s thoughts. So that, the reader can understand what the writer tells, especially in writing essay.
One of the difficulties for students writer is discovering ideas and getting started. The students find the writing task very difficult. Like learning problem, writing is a serious problem to the students as student progress in their studies, they are expected to write about what they have learnt in their classes. However, if the students do not develop and improve their writing techniques, they will unable to keep up with their level.
There are two research problems of this research. Firstly, What are the students’ difficulties in writing an essay .Secondly, How do the students overcome the difficulties in writing an essay .
This study is descriptive research using a qualitative approach, the resarcher used triangulation for validity of the data and focus on the third semester of TBI in E class academic year 2019/2020, on this class there are 36 students, by using interview and documentation as data collection.
Based on tool the research the students of third semester in E class of TBI, some of the them got some difficulties to make a good an esaay, among the difficulties they are difficult to write parts of essay, not using the pattern of organization of the essay, getting ideas, connecting the first paragraph to the second paragraph, not writing by good structure, determining the topic and create the thesis sentence, developing a sentence or idea, choosing the term of language and structure, not using the vocabulary and tenses well. And the overcome difficulties in writing an essay sucha as practicing writing skill, memorizing the vocabulary, studying the grammar and tenses, improving knowledge, reading may referencess, increasing the writing structure, using an English language .
Based on this research, the researcher can givesome suggestion. For students, the students should have high motivation to learn writing essay, to increase their ability about writing. the suggestion for the researcher, the researcher more understand to make a good essay to become as add reference next researcher.
