Novel is defined as an invented prose narrative of considerable length and a
certain complexity that deals imaginatively with human experience, usually
through a connected sequence of events involving a group of person in a specific
setting. Most people are very interested to read a novel.
Pollyanna novel is a novel that tells about an optimistic child, which she lives
with her bitter aunt after her parents dead. She get so many bitter things from her
environment, but she had a glad game, especially she expect positively in
everything. Pollyanna was published in 1913. It was a bestselling novel by
Eleanor H. Porter. It considered a classic of children's literature.
Rolland Barthes defined that semiotic as the study of sign, symbol and
signification. Semiotics is related to everything that can be taken as a sign. It is a
study of how the meaning is created and semiotic is the study not only refers to
the signs in the daily conversation, but also everything that refers to other forms
such as words, pictures, sounds, gestures and objects in addition to the
explanation of Roland Barthes.
In this research, the researcher had conducted a research that investigates on
semiotic feature in Pollyanna novel by Eleanor H. Porter based on Roland Barthes
perspective. The researcher investigated the semiotic that exists in Pollyanna
Novel. The researcher used a library research as method. She took some data from
Pollyanna novel, then, investigated the semiotic based on Roland Barthes
perspective, especially denotation and connotation.
The researcher got the result; there are so many setting, conversation, and
narrations that consisted a semiotic, namely denotation and connotation. The
researcher shows some data taken from Pollyanna novel as sample for this case.
Eleanor H. Porter narrates the novel perfectly. There are many sign of his
narration in the novel. Dealing with Roland Barthes’ theory, it is called a semiotic.
