The Analysis of Language Style Used by Students of Academic Year 2015 on Whatsapp Group Chatting in IAIN Madura by Martin Joos Perspective

Language is primarily an instrument of communication among human being in a community. Everyone has language to communicate with other. When they want to communicate each other, they used language to communicate, share and give opinion. Without language, communication is not understood and people who hear do not understand of what we say or want. Language is used to express what we think or want. We can understand what people want with language. The source of data in this research is students chatting in whatsapp group. The focus of this research to finds the types of language style used by students and how are the language style used by students on whatsapp group chatting.
The researcher uses content analysis qualitative research. Because the research basically aims at describing the data in the form of word or written text. The data were described descriptively based on the research problem. To complete the data, the researcher documented students chatting of whatsapp goup on 22 August 2020 up to 30 August 2020. Then analyzed categorized the data in accordance with the kind of language style based on Martin Joos’s theory. The data analysis includes data condensation, data display and verification. To validate the data, the researcher uses technique triangulation.
The study reveals that the first and second research problems were solved by Martin Joos theory. According to that theory, these are several types of language style, these include frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. But kinds of language style are used by students on whatsapp group chatting just ware consultative and casual. Based on the observation and documentation, the results showed that there are fifteen data of student’s chatting that showed the kinds of language style. Three data for consultative style, and twelve for casual style. They use consultative style when they were talking about serious matter and it is usually used by the coordinator to their members. While they use casual style in relaxed or normal situation, such they were joking each other, for example communication with friends.
The researcher suggest to the further researchers who might conduct research in the field of language style to analyze other elements and use other methods
