, An Analysis on A Movie Entitled “Bilal: A New Breed of Hero”: Semiotics and Islamic Moral Values

Some people may be able to capture a message in a movie easily, but not a
few who have difficulty, even the people watch the movie by the purpose for
watching and entertainment only. The movie can provide information and educate
and even inspire the viewers. One of the ways to interpret the movie is by using
semiotics and Islamic moral values. Semiotic is the study of the sign while Islamic
moral values are the moral values based on Islamic view.
The researcher used qualitative approach with content analysis as the kind
of research. The primary source used was “Bilal: A New Breed of Hero” movie to
obtain the data. While the secondary sources were journals, articles, books, theses
related to this research to complete the primary data. In collecting the data, the
researcher implemented observation and documentation. Familiarizing and
organizing, coding and reducing, as well as interpreting and representing were used
to analyze the data. The researcher analyzed the movie entitled “Bilal: A New Breed
of Hero” by using Roland Barthes’ semiotics theory. Meanwhile, the researcher
used al-Ghazali’s theory of moral virtues for Islamic moral values.
Furthermore, the researcher found 42 data related to Barthes’ semiotics
theory which consists of denotation, connotation, and myth. Meanwhile, the
semiotics associated with the Islamic values by using al-Ghazali’s theory consisted
of al-Hikmah (wisdom), as-Syaja’ah (courage), al-Iffah (temperance), and al-Adl
(justice) found are 36 data. It means that there are 6 data from 42 data of semiotics
which are inapt with al-Ghazali’s theory after the 42 data are associated. The 6 data
are 4 data in as-Syaja’ah, they are in 5th data, 23rd data, 26th data, and 36th data.
Other data are 2 data in al-Iffah in 4th data and 24th
data. While 36 data which are
appropriate with al-Ghazali’s theory are 4 data in al-Hikmah (the 9
th data, the 16th
data, the 22nd data, and the 33rd data). 19 data in as-Syaja’ah (2
nd data, 6th data, 8th
data, 10th data, 11th data, 15th data, 17th data, 18th data, 19th data, 21st data, 25th data,
27th data, 28th data, 29th data, 37th data, 38th data, 39th data, 40th data, 41st data). 12
data in al-Iffah (1
st data, 3rd data. 7th data, 12th data, 14th data, 20th data, 30th data,
31st data, 32nd data, 34th data, 35th data, and 42nd data). The last, 1 data in al-Adl
(13th data). The semiotics can be used to find the meaning of the movie, it will be
very useful if it is associated with Islamic moral values. Every Islamic moral value
found can be implemented into daily life
