The Correlation between Arabic Consonant Sound and English Consonant Sound Pronunciation of English Department Students of State Islamic Institute of Madura

Muslifah - Nama Orang;

Keywords: Arabic Consonant, English Consonant, and Pronunciation.
Pronunciation is the best mediator to make the conversation understood. People
who communicate using English would speak fluently and connect if they have good
pronunciation. The pronunciation of native speakers is not owned by everyone, and it
happens because geographical and linguistic differences can affect a person’s
pronunciation. Several English consonant pronunciations are not found in the Indonesian
pronunciation; the consonants are / θ /, / ð /, and / ʃ /. In this case, Arabic and English
consonants have the same pronunciation rule. The English consonants not found in
Indonesian pronunciation will exist in Arabic pronunciation. The State Islamic Institute
of Madura students are already good at Arabic pronunciation because they can recite the
Holy Quran. This research has two research objectives; 1) to know whether there is a
correlation between Arabic consonant and English consonant sound pronunciation, 2) to
measure the significance between the two variables.
The research method used in this research is a quantitative approach, and the
research design is correlational research. The instruments used in this research are tests
and documentation. The study population is the fifth semester of English department
students of IAIN Madura, and the sample used is proportionate stratified random
sampling. Therefore, the researcher took 3 respondents from A, B, and D classes, while
in C and E class were 4 respondents. The data analysis applied in this research is
Spearman rank correlation because the data is ordinal.
The finding reveals a correlation between Arabic consonant sound and English
consonant sound pronunciation of English department students of IAIN Madura. It is
proved by comparing the result of rcount with rtable. The result of rcount is higher than rtable
(0,639 > 0,506). The value of rcount includes the third interpretation (0,51 – 0,75), and the
interpretation is the correlation between variables X and Y are high. Therefore, the
researcher concludes that Arabic consonant sounds significantly correlate with English
consonant sound pronunciation. However, the alternative hypothesis is accepted, and the
null hypothesis is rejected. In conclusion, the consonants measured by the researcher had
correlation each other. The consonants that correlate each other are /b/ and ب/ ,t/ and ت ,
/d/ and د/ ,k/ and ك/ ,dʒ/ and ج/ ,f/ and ف/ ,θ/ and ث/ ,ð/ and ذ/ ,s/ and س/ ,z/ and ز/ ,ʃ/ and
ش/ ,h/ and ح/ ,m/ and م/ ,n/ and ن/ ,l/ and ل/ ,r/ and ر/ ,j/ and ي ,and /w/ and و .The
contrastive analysis argues that Madurese cannot pronounce consonants / θ /, / ð /, and / ʃ
/ because these consonants do not exist in Madurese's vocabulary. Supposedly, the learner
cannot sound the consonants / θ /, / ð /, and / ʃ / because of the learner's condition. They
cannot pronounce those consonants because of the absence in their mother tongue.
Fortunately, Madurese can pronounce / θ /, / ð /, and / ʃ / because the Arabic language is
the interlanguage of Madurese people. In conclusion, the Arabic language may influence
the English consonant pronunciation because they had the same pronunciation rules
